Regression trailer analysis - drama

Synopsis: A detective (Ethan Hawke) and a psychoanalyst (David Thewlis) uncover evidence of a satanic cult while investigating the rape of a traumatized teen (Emma Watson).

The establishing shot used for this trailer was a close angle shot of someone holding a mp4 player or a walkie talkie, also, the setting is very dull, which influences the feeling that there is something bad about to happen, which is the further enforced by the movie title, meaning that someone is returning to a emotional/ physical level which is lower than what they have now, which suggests to the audience that the movie is going to be dark and maybe disturbing, completely filling out the essence of drama. There is some non diegetic music introduced as soon as the trailer starts, however in this trailer it is very quiet and has a deep bass to it, as if there as a sudden shock, which would make the audience feel at unease. After the slow music is introduced there is a narration from a character, this could either be perceived as being heard from the mp4 player or  a whole narration for only the audience to see themselves. The camera then cuts to a quick image of a house, whilst maintaining the creepy aura, the camera uses a steadicam shot to circle around the house slightly, whilst we are able to see someone walking into it. The camera then fades to black, suggesting a change of time, where we are able to see a character, presumably a detective of some sort looking through a room. The reason the audience might assume that the man in this shot is a detective is because he is wearing a trench coat, which not many civilians wear. However it also leaves an enigma as to why a detective is in that house, sparking all sorts of thoughts like why and if the house is abandoned and why he is looking there, could it be for a crime, all of these questions are left unanswered to us.

After that shot we are introduced to a close shot of a picture and a small mirror, the camera then zooms into the picture, which in turn is showing the audience who those people in the picture are, although we are not told directly, we are left to think what has happened to those people. whilst this shot is being used the narration tells us a date, which implies that there most likely was a crime committed, so the audience would feel like they would want to investigate further into it just like the characters, so the audience are able to sympathise with the character in wanting to find out more about the crime. Following this, there is an over the shoulder shot showing the audience a conversation between Emma Watson and the detective, which follows the usual style in which the shoulder is blurred out and the person being captured on the opposite side of the conversation is the main focus of the shot, this is the introductory shot of the character that Emma Watson plays, we are then shown the use of a shot reverse shot, so as the audience can have a deeper connection with the conversation and those two characters. The camera continually fades to black, so that the audience can understand when there is a change of time. After that sequence we are introduced to another character, where the camera uses a mid shot to capture his upper body, although we can see from the way his arms are crossed and the way he is dressed, a tie, jumper and a shirt along with glasses, the audience would be able to guess that he is a smart character, possibly a scientist or maybe even another detective of some sort. This shot sticks out more than the rest because of the use of lighting for this shot, as we are hardly able to make out his facial expressions or the details on the front of the body, but however we are able to see that the lights reflecting off of his back, so it makes that character seem mysterious, this shot also sticks out since the audience would want to find out who he is or what he looks like, putting more depth into the shot makes it have much more quality therefore being much more visually appealing.

After that, there is another visually appealing yet dark and somewhat unnerving shot of the camera slowly zooming into a metronome, ticking backwards and forwards, with extremely dull lighting used to emphasize the metronome, and therefore making the shot seem threatening, as if there was going to be something happening or that something would jump out from behind it, this shot sticks out just as much as the previous shot since the high definition used for it focuses the audience on that one prop. The camera then fades to white and cuts to the outside of the house, where the audience is introduced to the camera circling around the house using a steadicam shot, although the lighting is fairly dull we are still able to see the details on the ground from the moonlight such as leaves and grass as well as mud, but the use of placing the camera behind a tree branch makes it seem as if there was something watching the house. Suddenly the music starts changing to a more tense and deprived state, where it succumbs to more of a horror theme, which is in synchronisation with a low angle shot capturing an old woman looking down directly at the camera and putting her finger to her mouth, 'shh'. This shot is eerie since usually we would stereotypically see old people as innocent and kind, especially an old lady, so this completely subverts the stereotype of old people, instead making them seem creepy and threatening, also, the lighting is even darker in this shot, however it was cleverly used so that we would be able to see the facial expressions, but not much else, where the lights are focused mainly on her, The camera then cuts to black and we are introduced to a new setting, where we are shown a mass of people with hoods all staring at one spot, suddenly the trailer becomes much more fast paced and tense than it was in the beginning, as the story starts to unravel, again the lighting changes from extremely dull, hard to make out to a sudden flash where we are able to see the group. Along with this they are all wearing cloaks like cultists of some sort, which possibly could infer that there is some sort of satanic ritual of some sort going on, which would shock the audience since they would probably only have been expecting a robbery of a kind. Before we are able to fully take in the surrounding the camera starts rotating around so that we are able to see what everyone is looking at, as well as being shown the scenery, so that we can understand what is going on a bit more. After that there is a very interesting transition which one clip is cut into many different shots and fades to black several times in order to create a flashing effect, inducing panic or more fear into the audience rather than a simple fade to black once, the use of this transition was also very clever because it is in synchronisation with the music which had become extremely fast then suddenly cuts.

After the creepy sequence there is a two person shot showing Emma Watson and the detective standing at a door or a window, however, Emma Watson is given prevalence throughout this trailer since the purpose of this was to show her feelings and emotions and fear which is going through her mind, so the audience can sympathise for her and feel sorry for her, however the audience would also like the detective because he is shown to be a good character and is helping out the situation. Directly after this shot a sound of a clock starts ticking, signifyin that the trailer is going to finish soon, however we are introduced to some names just after halfway through in the hopes that some people would know that person and would be more likely to watch the film, and in short to gain popularity and more of a chance of gaining more money. Following that the clock takes over all sound, increasing the drama, whilst in conjunction with a extreme close up shot of the detectives' eyes, where we are able to see the fear and dismay, yet before we are able to fully analyse since the trailer speeds up and the shots become quicker and quicker we are introduced to a dolly shot showing Emma Watson's character running down a hallway with the use of a dolly shot, but the camera isn't fully steady towards the end. Then towards the end the non diegetic clock ticking slows down then suddenly cuts into the title screen, where the title starts closing in on the screen until it eventually fades away, leaving a dark sound and thunder, leaving us struck with awe from the short yet great trailer.
